Wanna give a quick shoutout to the federal judge last week who struck down the Arkansas law that tried to outlaw gender-affirming care for minors, not only ruling it unconstitutional, but including 311 statements of fact all going against the gender-affirming care ban in a ruling that was 80 pages long. Especially since these statements make it harder for transphobes to appeal and iirc this is considered precedent.

name, don't forget to credit him by name! BIG thank you to judge james moody jr. for protecting trans kids in my state!!

the ruling came out on june 20th 2023 this is great! re: precedent as i understand it because the case was decided in a district court it’s persuasive but not binding precedent so other district judges should take it into consideration don’t know much about how appeals work but i expect this will end up in the circuit court hopefully monody’s ruling will stand

the front panels of a button up shirt cut out of embroidered floral tulle and overlapped such that the embroidery pattern is continuousALT
the halves no longer overlapped so that the individual button bands are visibleALT
the back of a button band; the front is a pale pink that shows through the tulle, but the back is multicolored small floral printALT

due to factors such as "time pressure" and "tulle is of the devil" my expectations for this shirt are not high. but i spent a lot of time imagining these button bands and they turned out pretty nice

sleepnoises

The back piece of a shirt made from floral tulle. The yoke (fitted part around neck and shoulders) has five panels, the seams of which are very visible because the tulle is layered multiple times.ALT
A collar, not attached to a shirt. It has cut out bits of the tulle with embroidered leaves on them stuck to it.ALT
Close photo of the collar, fake-attached to a shirt on a person, held on with a pinch to the front. The person is also wearing a green blazer.ALT

progress on this includes:

  • attached the back and the yoke; did the yoke with wonky little panels for reinforcement(?), as it's not double-layered, and for a fun symmetrical piecing moment
  • attached fronts to back at shoulders (not pictured)
  • constructed a collar and collar stand and arranged Leafs upon it
  • started hand stitching down leafs. it would be more elegant to do this before assembling the collar, but i can't visualize how both the seam allowances and the crease in the collar work + the tulle is itchy if misplaced

have yet to do sleeves, side seams, finishing hand stitching on collar, attaching collar, sleeve plackets (on tulle??), cuffs, Buttonholes (evil to me)

Tulle shirt with floral embroidery hanging backlit in a windowALT

Shirt's done except for finishing the collar handstitching & touching up some of the buttonholes (used a friend's fancy machine with varying success). Lots of things wrong with it that are hard to see from more than three feet away

No pictures of it on me because I have yet to obtain a suitable layering piece which is a really funny problem to have!

Finished the collar! If you want to make embroidery you cut out of some tulle look like it is On There For Real this is what I did

  • roughly cut out and place embroidery. baste with glue stick (glue sticks to the back of the embroidery and not the tulle)
  • tack it down with a color matched running stitch (or whatever) along the stems and centers
  • cut off more tulle from the edges with tinier scissors
  • tack down the edges. with, in this case, a different thread color, do a faux chain stitch where you grab the very end of a stitch from the extant embroidery
  • like so
needle poking up through fabric a little beyond one of the stitches on the tulleALT
needle poked through the end of a stitch on the tulleALT
needle returning to the hole it came out ofALT
finished stitchALT

this has the benefit of kind of squashing down any tulle that didn't get trimmed

Shirt collar with embroidered fern-like leaves stitched to itALT

and now it moves with the fabric and doesn't stick up at the edges!

same person still selfie-ing, now additionally wearing the suit jacket that goes with the pantsALT

Does anyone have an update on where things are at with the writers strike? It's disappeared from my various feeds and algorithms.

fans4wga

The writers' strike is ongoing and the studios are still not returning to the negotiating table. Unfortunately a lot of the coverage has tapered off because we're on 50+ days of striking and it's not new anymore. The last strike in 2007 lasted 100 days, so don't be surprised if this strike lasts as long, or even longer.

The biggest recent news is that the Directors' Guild of America (DGA) voted to ratify their new agreement with the studios (article from June 23), and it appears likely that the actors' guild (SAG-AFTRA) will also take a deal instead of striking (article from June 24). Although this is disappointing news, it's completely expected. During previous strikes, the WGA held its own without other unions going on strike. Which is to say—don't be disheartened by the news that there won't be a triple strike. The WGA is strong enough!

Please keep vocally supporting the WGA online to keep the pressure on the studios & to keep WGA members motivated and encouraged! There are many ongoing donation drives, such as the Star Trek fan snack squad (Twitter account required to DM the organizer) and the Our Flag Means Death snack squad (opens the PayPal fundraising page—no Twitter required). There's a longer list of ongoing donation drives here.

The Entertainment Community Fund is also always accepting donations to support entertainment workers affected by the strike. Please boost and encourage your friends to keep supporting the strike. Hashtag #IStandWithTheWGA #DoTheWriteThing to boost the cause!

truly no video game moment will ever surpass the part in portal 2 where glados says "well, this is the part where he kills us" and wheatley says "hello, this is the part where i kill you" and you unlock the achievement titled "the part where he kills you" (description: this is that part) and the chapter title appears on the screen and reads: chapter nine: the part where he kills you
